I have an AMD PCNet 79C978 HomePna card. The card does not connect to Internet with the new kernel 2.6 Linux-distributions such as Ubuntu (warty), but I had no problems with Debian woody and the old 2.4 kernel. I use DHCP.

I managed to solve the problem for Fedora Core 3 (2.6 kernel).

I just added this line to /etc/modprobe.conf “options eth0 homepna=1” then run “depmod -a” and rebooted.

Now I want to ask you here on Linux Question org. because I did not get an answer from the official Ubuntu forum, can I do something similar in Ubuntu. I need some advice because the files in Ubuntu are quit different compared to Fedora but equal to Debian.

The driver (=module?) I suppose is there somewhere in the system, but how to make it active?

I found the solution at last:

Added in /etc/modules these lines

eth0 homepna=1
pcnet32 homepna=1

Then the command “modprobe pcnet32 pcnet32_homepna=1”

and “depmod -a” and rebooted.

I did the same in Knoppix 3.8.1 (live CD) which also is a Debian distribution, but when it runs from the RAM memory I couldn't reboot, because then every configuration is lost.

Instead of "depmod -a" and a reboot I wrote "depmod -a: /etc/init.d/networking restart" but that did not work.

In the newest version of Knoppix you can only boot with the kernel 2.6 which causes these problems.

Any suggestions what to do?
