No internet!

I sit as a client in a network, but I can't ping anybody else in the network or any outside IP's. When I tried to install RedHat it worked without any problems! But in all other dists I've tried (Slackware 8.1, Mandrake 9.0, Debian 2.2) it hasn't worked at all, the only thing that worked was pinging myself.

Does anybody have an idea of what might be wrong??

(forgot to say i'm running Mandrake 9.0 at the moment)

What do 'route' and 'ifconfig' say? Possible reasons:
1) Network not configured. May be true with Slack and Debian.
2) An error inconfiguration (Mandrake).
3) NIC not detected. Not likely, because all the distros use the same drivers (from kernel).
