No Ethernet connection for Linux

I am running Slackware Linux 10.0. Everything else seems to be setup just fine. But my ethernet card doesn't work. I called the cable people a few days ago and they sent someone out today. I connected the modem to my computer, but Linux can't get out on the Internet. I read everything I could find, and it looked like it was just going to work OK, but it doesn't. Nothing that I read gave me any answers to the problem or how to fix it. How do I make the Internet work???

Can you ping the device that the ethernet card is connected to?

Do you have a physical link light?

Is the address showing up correctly?
ifconfig

Does the routing table look right?
route -n

Are you just unable to resolve hostnames or do you have problems with IPs too.
