no eth0?

hi..

i got a really old machine (75mhz)
this one has ethernet card(i plugged lan into one of hole which looks like ethernet port, so i assuming this is an ethernet card.. weird thing is the card has another port(?) which is bigger than serial port and smaller than parrellel port.)

and the light in the card is up.

but the comp is not seeing the ethernet card.
(ifconfig -a : shows only lo not eth0)

i don't have X,(no linuxconf)
how can i find out what kind(brand) of this ethernet card is..
and configure it if i need to?(i thought linux detects network cards automatically)

thank you

ps..

cat /proc/pci
shows two entries for motherboard(intel 430fx [tritron])
one for something else(which doesn't look like ethernet)
how do i make sure that i have an ethernet card in this comp?

--;

Every electronic device has an FCC number this will be one way to tell what you have I havnt had to do this in a while so a Google search for FCC cross matching might be in order,... then look up the hardware at your distro's web site to see if its supported

doublefailure,

the machine (and its chipset) that you're using is very old -- i wouldn't be surprised if the nic installed in it is not ethernet, but token ring. both have rj-45 connectors, and token rings also use that outdated port you spoke of. it's not impossible to get it working under linux, but you'll save yourself a whole lot of headaches by scrapping it and starting over with a new card. for older systems, i've had great luck with 3com's 3c509B-TPO. most distro's will be able to auto-probe its irq and i/o address (rare with isa cards), and you should be able to pick one up off ebay for about $5. good luck!
