Unhappy No DNS and No Internet

Hi,

I'm a bit new. I have RedHat and my eth0 says that it's active and I did a "ifconfig" and it does have an ip address, but I cannot seem to ping any web sites or any NAMED computer on the network. Locally, I can ping via an IP ADDRESS, but not by name. And on the web I can't ping anything.

All the other Windows-based PCs can get out to the internet with no problem.

This problem is happening at work. So; I took my notebook home and tried it there and the same problem happened. At home I have Bellsouth DSL so they've provided a really cheap DSL modem and all the computers connect to it via a router/hub. At work we have T1.

Well, you need to make sure both "route" and your "/etc/resolv.conf" are properly set up. Are you using DHCP?

Yes I am using DHCP. I don't now about "route", but I did open my resolv.conf (based on another post I looked at) and I didn't see anything relative. I'm not logged into my system right now so I don't know what it says... but it only had 1 line of text and it didn't look important at all.

Hi,

You'll need to add a nameserver to the resolve.conf file. Try adding the following line

namesever X.X.X.X #Assign for example the IP address of your ISP's DNS. Also you can assign as many nameservers as you like. For example you could add a local DNS if you have one.

Trying pinging again.

Also you may want to check if your firewall allows ICMP packets. I suspect it would since you can ping locally via IP addresses.

Hope this helps.

YEyayagaagauiagiaa yahhooooo!!!! Ok thank you for posting. Because you mentioned certain things I dug into my Network Configuration and solved the problem. It was something very simple that I didn't do. I went to the Ethernet Device properties and enabled the option to "Automatically obtain DNS information from provider". That's it. So it was totally my fault. Thanks. I'm online now.

Question; do you use Firefox.. what browser should I use and what email client should I use? Thanks.

Did my suggestion help? Firefox is a good browser to use and so is Lynx if you want a text browser. As for an email client Thunderbird is good as well. I guess you must be using KDE or Gnome. They come with some great applications as well as far as browsers and email clients are concerned.
