No contact to the network adapter?

Hello all!

I have difficulties connection to my little home network. I can ping 127.0.0.1 but nothing else. When I try to bring up "IFCFG -eth0" I get a message saying "device not attached".
When the machine boots, I get a message saying "Bringing up device Eth0", so it's in theresomewhere.

So how do I wake up the network adapter? It's probably not that hard, I just don't know what to do.

The network adapter is a 3Com 3C509, and I'm running Red Hat 7.0.

Best regards (and hopeful eyes)
Bo Miller

first check to make sure that the module is loaded. type this: lsmod
you should see the 3c59x module in the list.
if so. then type ifconfig and see if there is an ip address associated with the eth0 interface.
if not, then type ifconfig eth0 192.168.x.x *or* whatever your network is configured to be.
ie if my network is 192.168.1.0 and i have 3 workstations with the ip adresses of 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.2, and 192.168.1.3 then i would just give the new linux box i was setting up an ip of 192.168.1.4
---
if your still having problems, post again and describe your network a little more

lsmod lets me know that I'm mistaking the network adapter in the machine. The 3Com is located in the windows machine next to the Linuxmachine, and that one holds a Realtek, for which a driver is neatly shown with lsmod. on me.
So I run the ifconfig eth0 with appropriate adresses and can now ping the windows machine flawlessly. For yet undiscovered reasons I can't ping from Win to Linux, but that has yet to be investigated.

Anyway - thanks for the help!

Kind regards
