What distro is it you are using? Try "ps -ef | grep ftp"

nm - im an idiot.
actually not, but i found out that inetd automatically starts proftp.
now, more questions:
i tried changing the Port to something other than 21, but it still listens on 21.
and
is there a way to restart inetd, or all the programs started by inetd ?
thanks

running a port scan on yourself if not really the best way to do it. You need to run it remotely to see what is really open/closed/etc. And also if you run
netstat -nap
it will tell you what is listening on what ports.

To restart inetd depends on your distro

Slack: /etc/rc.d/rc.inetd restart

RH: cd /etc/init.d/
./<service_name> restart
