nis client login - user home dir not fnd

Have set up nis master server,checked ypserv is running, nisswitch.cong has applicable nis entries, done ypinit -m, and there's a /var/yp/nisdomainname directory, there was no /var/yp/securenets file so I set one up to allow which hosts were able to access nis server.

set up client checked that ypbind was running, the ypwhich gives me the correct name of the nisserver, ypcat passwd gives me output of the nis servers password file with correct entries.

All /etc/passwd files have +:::::: entries at the end of the file.

However when I login to a client, in textmode, as a nis user, I get "No directory found for /home/user
home='/'.bash-2.5a$"
I have checked on the server that this user does have a home directory - appreciate any help.

Yes I am running a firewall on the nis server , yes I am using NFS but have shut these NFS daemons down
