NIC Teaming/Bonding RHEL4

I have a server with two NICs. What I'm trying to do is create a failover solution by teaming ("bonding") those 2NICs so they share 1 IP address virtually. Which works fine, but I don't want both NICs to share the same MAC address.

If eth0 and eth1 are both connected, the ping is fine.
If eth1 is disconnected, the ping is fine.
If eth0 is disconnected, the host is unreachable.

If anyone has any suggestions/solutions please let me know. Thanks

well you'd want to check the status of the bond itself, "cat /proc/sys/net/bond/bond0" is *possibly* the right path, can't remember offhand.

from the sound of it though, the second nic simply isn't part of the bond. also provide details about what options you created the bond with and where your mention oc MAC addresses comes from. not sure how that fits in here...
