NIC resource busy

NIC " resource busy" With Edubuntu 7.04 and Knoppix 5.1.

Edubuntu network administration and knoppix allow configuration of the card. Then ifconfig gives the "resource busy" message.
I have tried this with just the onboard NIC, and then pci card after bios inactivation of onboard NIC.

The internet switch supporting this computer works for another Edubuntu system..so I assume that I can get the network to the offending computer.

What am I overlooking? Thanks.

Maybe a malfunctioning cable or port on the switch.
Could be the nic not supported by the latest kernels in use.
Post the name and type nic you are using.
