nfsroot problem

Hi, my 2.4.22 Kernel won't mount an nfs export as root.
It dies during booting the kernel with "VFS: Kernel Panic: cannot mount root fs on 00:ff".

the kernel parameters are "root=/dev/nfs" (wich is a dummy to tell the kernel to use nfs), BOOTP and TFTP are working well.

What is the problem??

thanks, Nils
P.S. Most HOWTOs say something about an option during configuring the kernel to be made that enables nfsroot capabilities. However, I couldn't find it!
Is it still needed or even still available?

EDIT: I found the option in the .config file and edited it by hand, re-compiling :)
I'll give you further information once its done and I tried it in a few minutes.
