When I use nfs, I connect perfectly and get nice transfer speeds (around 16mb/sec) for about 5 seconds. At this point, the speeds have dwindled to around 230kb/sec and the copy stalls. (This is using large files--over 100 mb.) When the copy stalls, my entire computer freezes. I get no response from keyboard input or mouse input. This lasts anywhere from 5 to 20 seconds.

Does anyone have any idea what I should do about this? I am using nfs because sftp and ftp limit my speeds to around 2mb/sec (max) and usually run at 300-700kb/sec.

Sounds like a hawrdware conflict, I had a similar issue before and I disabled my onboard ethernet card and installed a pci one(they're quite cheap actually).
That's what I did, maybe someone else can give you more clues on this but if it's an irq conflict there isn't much you can do.

Yes. Thank you for the idea. I purchased a Linksys NIC a while ago to replace the shoddy onboard card.

The weird thing is that I'm using Debian, which is my preferred operating system. I've achieved really striking results when using Mandrake and SuSE (around 20mb/sec with sftp). Perhaps I should continue trying distributions.

Thank you for your help. After a closer inspection, this problem only seems to exist when using wireless internet. Seeing as it is wireless G, I get 56mbps. Multiply that by 1024 to get kbps, divide by 8 to get k/s, then multiply by .37 for network overhead, and you get 2MB/sec. When using wired lan, I get a nice 10mb/s. The biggest problem is the freezing, though. That still exists and is probably due to my network trying to force 100mbps all the time. I'll see what happens if I set it back to auto.
