Unhappy NFS Troubles

For the most part, I've had very little trouble learning linux and getting things working just the way I want. I have an older computer setup as an NFS server and dialup machine that houses the modem. Whenever I'm playing an mp3 over the network on my client machine, if I am downloading something, the downloading virtually stops for the entire length of the song I am playing. The network itself is 100mb and I am far from utilizing it all. The server runs 2.4.18 and the client runs 2.4.14. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
