I somehow got the idea that setting up folder sharing was going to be easy with Ubuntu 7.10. I do not want to use Samba since I do not use Windows at all.
On each of four machines I created added a directory to the shared folders (System / Administration) and then selected NFS. I added both host names and IP addresses. Set the directory permissions and left it alone.
So what next .... do I install the NFS server on each machine?

I don't really know what you are asking. What have you done exactly so far. and what is the exact issue you are having?
In basics you define the shares on the server in /etc/exports file.
Once changes are made restart the nfs daemon service
Then the clients mount the share to a directory of your chosing.
well you just said it ..... I have defined the folder to share.
You mention the server (what server) and the exports file. So when does that come into the process? Sounds like I have to edit the exports file. Do I need to do anything else?

Things to do.
Edit /etc/exports file on the server machine defining the shares on itself.
Make sure the ports for NFS are open if a firewall is running on the server.
Restart nfsd daemon and firewall if changes were made.
If a firewall is active the quickest is disable it to eleimante that as the cause of no connection.
On the clients setup mount points and mount the share.
