Is your UID the same on both machines? Did you use the rw option in /etc/exports? Are you accessing as root? The default option for root is root_squash (root does not have write access)

In order for root to have access the no_root_squash option must be set in exports. Secondly as Linux user the UID as the basis of identification you must either be a member of the group and give the group write access or have the same UID on both boxes. type id to see your UID

Hope this helps

Did you try "linux rescue" from the first disk of your cd set?
There are three fundamental files that affect the boot process
/boot/grub/grub.conf (boot loader, specification of the root partition, it is likel that this is where your problem is)
/etc/inittab (probably not this one)
/etc/fstab (if any of these entries is incorrect you will fail to boot.)
