Newbie - X over network

Hi, im running RH8 and I want to be able to open a X window session from uni (both have plenty of bandwith). Anyway, how do I enable the xserver so I can log in and is there any software for windows that acts as an Xclient, kind of like M$ windows terminal server client?

Yes, im a , so my question may even look stupid

Lightbulb there should be nothing to it.

If you want an x window to come up on your windows machine, all you have to do is get some software like Exceed. I've always used exceed because it comes with a lot of fetures. You can down load other someware that is free from www.download.com and do a search for an X emulator. What you would basically have to do is run the emulator on you pc, and it will ask you to what host to connect to and u can then enter your ip and then it will go and execute the xterm command on the server back to your display ( your machine) do it all the time. my linux machine doesnt even have a monitor on it, and i just get xterm windows from it and administrator that way, any questions let me know, Jimmy

Um.. hang on a minute.

What machine are you trying to access?
Is it a Uni controlled machine, or your redhat machine?

Slick.

Exceed (Hummingbird) is a full fledged X server.
You will need something like that on a Windows machine to see and work with X applications running on a remote machine
There are shareware X servers.

When you want to share displays with unix machine's you'll need
xhost +mymachine.domain.something for giving access.

Yes.. You'll need to allow your Redhat machine to send X traffic to your remote machine, as asertion correctly stated using :

xhost +your-remote-machine

where your-remote-machine is either a dns, or an ip address.

May I also suggest Xwin32 as a low cost alternative to Exceed. Not only does it have a trial, you can also use it non-commercially for um.. I think 30 minutes at a time.

The latest version also has 3D render support, essential for those pretty Gnome windows...

I don't work for them, I just use it.

http://www.xwin32.com/

[edit] I'm not aware of *any* shareware / freeware X servers for windows [/edit]

Slick

VNC is a very good alternative for remote controling of your computer.
