I am new to linux, about 48 hours now, and I am seemingly stuck trying to get internet access to my linux machine from my win xp ICS 'server'. I currently have several computers running windows connected through a switched hub to the windows xp comp that is connected to the net by usb adsl (not the best way but it was the cheapest at the time). All windows computers share the connection and can see each other etc... no worries.
now to the linux machine, have spent much time looking in my linux book on how this sort of connection should be done. The book only seems to talk about connecting to the internet via modem or connecting to a local network, with no mention of that local network being connected to the internet.
So far I can ping my main computer (winxp) by typing ping 192.168.0.1 no problems, likewise I can ping from my main comp to the linux comp by typing ping 192.168.0.3 (as this was the ip I assigned the linux machine in netconf under the basic host info > adaptor 1 tab. Whenever I try and ping from my linux comp to the web it says destination host unreachable, but the interesting thing is it does find the right ip address, for example if I type ping linux.com it will display
PING linux.com (66.35.250.170) from 192.168.0.3 : 56(84) bytes of data.
from lucas.WORKGROUP (192.168.0.3): Destination Host Unreachable
When I try and start netscape it says tcp error: no route to host.
I thought I had defined the ip of the host as the gateway, but it is all getting pretty confusing, becasue there are seemingly so many gateways that need to be entered when setting up on netconf.
question: does the default gateway eg. 255.255.255.252 that my isp gave me for my adsl connection come into play at all on the setup of my linux comp connected to the previously mentioned via lan +hub?
yes I changed the subnet mask to 255.255.255.252 and hey presto connected to the internet straight away with netscape. however now I cannot ping to the net for example when I try and type ping linux.com, there is no action, no responce until you hit ctrl+c then it says 37 packets sent none returned etc??
I can however telnet to my isp hosted website.
my xp box is 192.168.0.1, I dont know where the 192.168.0.254 came from?
