ok first of all i want to warn u im a BRAND NEW Linux user, as of last nite i did my first install.
i have my main box running windows XP sp1 and i want to leave it that way atleast until im more comfortable with slackware. i have dial up connection running from my XP box. (because u can only get satelite high speed connection in my aread)
i want to set up a network with the slackware box to my xp box so that i can share files and the internet between the two. i have the network cards and cat5 and know they work as the slackware box dual boots with win 98 and have had 98 and xp networked since i got the xp box.
as i said im very new so i need good instructions on this, if ne1 can point me to a really good tutorial on it that would be great otherwise try your luck instructing me. i've got samba but not sure how it works either. basically having a fair bit of trouble and have tried finding sites today for info. no1 seems to need as simple help as i need. i have downloaded samba but got no idea how to use!
btw using the kde window manager is thats at all important, lol, i got no idea.
thanx heaps in advance for any help and sorry if i bother ne1 with this question. i couldn't find it answered in other posts but maybe i wasn't looking for the right thing.
i think i need samba-latest.tgz but hacing trouble finding such a file. i cant get samba installed doin installpkg and the file name cause its not a tgz and when i renamed it the file didn't work!
i've bn trying to get this working all afternoon as well as early this morning and last nite with no luck. i really dont know what im doin! please some1 help me cause i need this network set up.
btw here it is 1:18am Friday so if dont respond u no why, cause im in bed. i'll be back on tomorrow nite.
Your best bet might be to compile samba from source (this can sound scary, but it's not). when i tried to set up samba, i found the package horrible. also, when you download the source, there are step by step instructions included.
If you go to www.samba.org and pick a mirror, you can get the source there, (top right corner there is a download link)
i'd suggest downloading it to your home directory, then just open up a terminal there, and type tar -zxvf samba-latest.tar.gz
that should create a directory called samba-2.2.8a, and if you go into there and look in the docs directory, there are some really good tutorials. and if you need clarification, feel free to pm me, or use google.
thanx heaps for ur reply i will hopefully get to that later tonite when i get some time. studyn 4 uni exam atm.
i am thinking that maybe my modem is recognized by linux also cause i cant share the net when i have followed other ppls advice in other posts on this board.
my network card is F5D5000, is there a way to know if the network card is being recognised?
cheers

ok apparently samba is already installed on slackware 9 since it was already in the pkgtools section.
as i said i dont even know how to check if my network card is detected. so as u can see im a total newbie. if ne1 can point me to really easy to follow instructions for slackware (if that makes ne diff) and is there a good resource for drivers someware.
i really got no idea but very much willing to learn. couldn't made head from tails of the HOWTO document on samba, lol. hopefully i'll be able to get my mate to give me a hand with nething links you ppl give me or advice since he more familiar with linux just not networking.
If you want to know if your NIC is up and running do an ifconfig. If there is an entry starting with eth0 and an IP address and such your up. You could also ping your IP adress too.
I did a little how-to on samba, it is here http://www.valkyrie.net/~tangle/comp.../smb_conf.htm.
ok it appears linux has not detected my network card since i have no eth0 entry in ifconfig. and according to the slackware book online it says i need netmods pkg to select my network card. but i cant find it in the system or on the cd newhere. i've searched the net on google but all the results i found seem to b for earlier versions of slackware. would that matter?
obviously im gonna need to set up this network card b4 i can get newhere else aren't i, lol. so if ne1 knows where i can get this pkg "netmods" i'd really appreaciate it. btw tangle that site of urs looks like its gonna be pretty good to follow. got that webmin program =)
You NIC uses the same chipset as a RealTek 8139/8139 NIC. The kernel module that it uses is named rt18139. Go to your /etc/rc.d directory and remove the # in front of the line that says /sbin/modprobe rt18139. That will allow for the module to be loaded when your PC reboots. If you wanted it to load without rebooting you can type /sbin/modprobe rt18139 at the command line. Then type ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.10 or what ever you want the ip address to be.
Then you need to edit the file named rc.inet1 so it the IP address and netmask are set the next time you reboot. Here is what my eth0 section of the file looks like.
# Edit these values to set up your first Ethernet card (eth0):
IPADDR="192.168.0.21" # REPLACE with YOUR IP address!
NETMASK="255.255.255.0" # REPLACE with YOUR netmask!
# Or, uncomment the following lines to set up eth0 using DHCP:
#USE_DHCP=yes
# If your provider requires a DHCP hostname, uncomment and edit below:
#DHCP_HOSTNAME="CCHOSTNUM-A"
I have Slack 8.1 so it shouldn't be any different that 9.0. Also here is the link to where I found what module you needed for your NIC, http://pigtail.net/LRP/swap.html.
are u wanting me to edit the rc.modules file? and if so how the hell do i do it? i can run the file, lol, but i cant figure out how to edit it. told u i was a real newie =P
i thought i could do it thru that webmin thing but that wanted me to do something on the net =S and im not connected to the net yet cause im not connected to the network.
cheers

To edit the file just log in as root and use an editor like kwrite. Just make a copy of the file and name it something like rc.modules-old. That way if you mess it up you have the original.
ok the networkd card is now detected and i've entered the ip address etc but it still doesn't seem to work
am i missing something? arrr its getting to the point where im ready to give up the idea of it all cause im so lost at it and have no idea whats goin on.
