Newbie - L2TP VPN Client?

I have for the life of me not been able to establish a VPN connection with my L2TP VPN server at work. Without this, I really can use linux on a day to day basis because I wouldn't be able to do my work.

I have installed openswan, xl2tpd, and even kvpnc. I continuously get an error message the pltuo is not running. After fixing that I run "sudo ipsec auto --up RRR" and I get an error --listen before --initiate. I read somewher that that message is out of date and should be --ready before --up. I try to run --ready, and I get the message "003 FATAL ERROR: bind() failed in find_raw_ifaces(). Errno 98: Address already in use". This is exhausting!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
