newbie iptables config...

Hi everyone !!!
I got a shorewall iptables configuration on mandrake 9.1. I mean that iptables seems t o hae been configured by shorewall. And i wonder if it's sure enough to protect a single computer on a DSL/cable connexion ???
On the old computer (mandrake 8.2), i wrote a script that seems to work on another simple DSL/cable internet connexion. Do you think it's better to run a prewritten firewall script like shorewall or any other ? (Cause they seem difficult to configure and "customize" ...)
Thanks
