Newbie adding Linux box to W2k Domain. Help.

Linux = Redhad 7.3
Linux box = LINACME
W2k Domain = acme.com (mixed mode)
W2k Server = MYLAB1
NT 4 Domain = ACMEDOMAIN
NT 4 PDC = ACME_NT4

Ok.. I got the linux box to join the NT4 ACMEDOMAIN, no problem.

Took the box off the NT4 network, (ACMEDOMAIN and ACME.COM on two physically seperate networks),
Connected to the W2k ACME.COM network.
Reconfigured the Linux Network settings. Resolved successfully the ACME.COM server MYLAB1 with a ping. Reconfigured smb.conf to show:
Workgroup = ACME.COM
Netbios name = LINACME
password server = MYLAB1

Now I try running as root the command "smbpasswd -j ACME.COM

I get the error message "change_trust_account_password: unable to read machine password for domain ACMEDOMAIN. Unable to join domain ACMEDOMAIN."
Why is it still pointing to the NT 4 Domain???

So I run the command "smbpasswd -j ACME.COM -r MYLAB1 -U username". enter my W2K password and I get this error...
"Error connecting to MYLAB1
Unable to join domain ACME.COM "

What am I doing wrong??

I think the samba version is 2.27. How can I confirn the version of Samba running?
How do I resolve this isue??

A linux expert here says he got a Linux box to join the same W2k domain successfully. I'm trying to sort this out with going to him.

Thanks!

Don't you just love windows domains?

Place the machine back on the domain it wants to be part of, then have the domain master remove it. After it is no longer part of this domain, it will be willing to join another domain.

Still not working??

Did so,
run command "smbpasswd - j ACME"
error = "cli_net_auth2: Error NT_STSTUS_ACCESS_DENIED
cli_nt_setup_creds: auth2 challenge failed....."

does the fact that I'm running samba version 2.2.3 have any thing to do with it?
