New User - seting up suse Linux 8.1 to network and web

Hi Guys
Looking for some help with the above.
I have just installed 8.1 in an attempt to improve my suse Linux skill to move from Win XP
I have set up a Smoothwall Firewall in place already and am just getting to grips whit that, now the next stage is to move over to Linux.

However I am experiencing issue getting it to connect to the web or the network using the Control Centre
I am sure it must be something simple I am doing wrong but I am still not able to access the net as yet.

Can any one help me, please.

System Small nothing fancy.

10G HDD
194 Ram
Network Card

CD ROM

Need some more info.

Is smoothwall running on this system?

Can you connect with smoothwall disabled?

Hi georider
Thanks for your reply.

Update
smoothwall is NOT running on this system

Be advise after some attempts and reading trial and error I have now been able to access the net from the new build suse 8.1 using konqueror. Which I am finding a bit bland. I believe this may have been due to the Suse Firewall not sure.
But as yet not able to see the system in windows or suse as part of the network. I am now able to ping the system but cannot see it in windows as paret of the network. I have tryed to update this install online with Yast 2 no joy Error Reads

# Initialisation failed. Try again if failure continues, choose another SUSE FTP/HTTP Server#

This applies for all 10 sites attempted.

What am I doing wrong? as the PCGods seem to want me to pull my hair out, but they will not win.
