New to Linux I need Road Runner

I have Red Hat Linux 6.0. I am not sure of the brand of NIC. I have a Windows 2000 box and my Linux box connected to a Linksys 4 port Cable/DSL router which then of course connects to my cable modem. Linux NIC light does not come on. If I plug the CAT5 cable from the cable modem directly into the linux box bypassing the router the NIC light comes on. So I am assuming the NIC does work. I just don't know where to go to setup the system to see the router and Road Runner network. I am a complete novice when it comes to networking with Linux and the whole interface. I just need a complete idiots guide to getting this up and running. I have seen how-to guides on just getting connected to Road Runner and I know I have to get some utilities and stuff but if you throw the router in I am not sure what to do. If anyone could tell me where to start (good online tutorials maybe) it would be appreciated. THANKS!

you can use the netconfig utility to try and setup your network configurations assuming your network card is working properly on the linux box.

depending on it you have your router to serve as a DHCP to your computers or assign static IP's, send us more information.

try to get the nic info, what kind...etc..
i have roadrunner and i setup a static ip to each of my computers.

you might want to also see into maybe updating your version of redhat... they are on 7.2 now.. 5 version newer than what you have now.

also, you can find out if your nic is working with the ifconfig command in linux.. what is the output of this when used.. ?

i work for roadrunner just to let you know, so we should be able to get you working...

My Router is setup as DHCP. I tried the netconfig at the command line is that what you meant? It gave me a bad command error. When I did the ifconfig command it said Local Loopback inetaddr: 127.0.0.1 and mask: 255.0.0.0 etc.

I have been trying to use Linuxconf to set it all up but I dont know if the Linux is seeing the card for sure. I set the network device to eth0 and gave the adapter an IP address etc and the host host name LinuxBox and checked DHCP. Do I need to install anything?...keep in mind I am brand new to Linux and a novice with networking...so I may not have installed/setup the NIC correctly for Linux.

I don't know what brand of NIC it is. It was given to me by a friend and I just stuck it in. I would eventually like to get a new version of Redhat but I will need to upgrade the hardrive it is only a 1.2GB. So for now I would like to try to get this to work.

Thanks in advance for any help.
