networks and IP's
 

hi i'm running a linux RH9 pc that connects to the internet via a laptop running XP, due to the fact redhat cant configure my intel modem. Anyways i can access the net fine and i also setup file sharing.

I now want to setup a server on my linux machine.

the laptop is using dial up internet access and a usb lan connecter, and i have a ethernet card in my PC.

So my question is - how would i find out the IP address that others from the net could access my server? would it be the same IP address given to the laptop from the ISP ?

It would be the external IP of your laptop (the one from your ISP), however you would need to forward the port used by file sharing into your Linux box (otherwise connections are going to go to your laptop).

I can't tell if Internet Connection Firewall provides this or not. I see there's a box for "IP address of host that provides this service" if you Edit the services entries in the ICF settings, but I don't know if that means it will forward connections on that port to the IP in the box, or just if it will allow connections from that IP to your box.

i tried the internet conection firewall settings, but nothing seems to work.

looks like ill have to buy a new modem, and make my pc the host for the internet sharing.

any other thoughts on this would be helpful though
