NetworkManager on Slackware 10.2

Hi

I'm trying to get NetworkManager to work on Slackware 10.2 and I've hit a brick wall. I managed to get it installed and I can launch the applet but it says 'no network devices have been found'.

I'm not sure where to go from here because I honestly don't have a good grasp of how HAL, DBUS, dhcdbd etc.. work.

I'm running kernel 2.6.15.2 and freerock gnome as root for testing.

If someone could nudge me in the right direction; I'd appreciate it.

Also, if anyone knows of another application similar to NetworkManager; let me know and I'll give that a try.

Thanks

are you sure hal, howl and dbus are runnign okay?

i am interesting in this as i want to use it on a laptop. did you compile this yourself??

I've made some progress.

I removed freerock gnome and installed dropline gnome, which has packages for hal, dbus, dhcdbd and networkmanager available on their wiki.

Its working now

FRG has these packages.

however, when you install them, if you go into '/etc/rc.d/' they init scripts are not marked as executable and therefore don't start at boot time. not sure why this is but you only have to chmod +x them. anyway, you've solved the prob, but that's a note for anyone else....

did you compile the package?

Glad you got it figured out. If you hadn't already seen the Wiki, I was going to point you in that direction. It appears you already found it. :)

It's just personal opinion, but it's generally best to install DLG on a clean Slackware system (e.g. without a previous FRG install) and vice-versa. However, if everything seems to be working okay, then I guess there are no worries.

We'd love to include NetworkManager with the 2.14.0 release of Dropline GNOME. It's a great tool. Unfortunately, there are some problems in Slackware's dhclient, but suggestions have been sent to Slackware.com to improve this. Additionally, I believe that there need to be some added dbus bindings (which are missing from Slackware's package) in order to make things work.

For anyone else who is interested in making NetworkManager work on DLG, FRG, Gware, etc. - please see this wiki.

How about for those of us who don't use gnome?

Anyway to get this working on Slack for those of us not using gnome, without having to install a load of unwanted gnome specific dependencies?
