Unhappy Networking with Suse 8.2

Hello, I am a newbie to Linux. I have removed Winxp off of my computer and my sons computer and installed Suse 8.2. All has gone well except for a few bugs. Well maybe they aren't bugs only things I don't yet understand. My question is in relation to home networking. I have read how-to's and scoured the web for info on making a simple home network. I have no idea how to even begin but want to network my computer with my sons. I did this easily with Winxp installed on both computers but I am at a loss with Suse. My set up is a broadband Internet connection that goes to a RCA cable modem that goes into an Ethernet broadband router that then has two cables that go to each computers network cards. I would like to share files with both computers. Please help with instructions that I can understand. I have only been using Linux for a couple of weeks.
