networking win2k server and mandrake 8.2

Can somebody help me connect my 2 laptops one running win2k server edition and the other running mandrake linux 8.2?
my doubt's are as follows:
1) how should the ip address be set for each of the machine?
2) can i just connect the 2 laptops using a network cable with their nic's?
if i can get a step by step guide, it would be great!
please help me.....

1. Without a dhcp server, addresses will have to be set manually. This is done in control panel in windows and with /sbin/ifconfig in linux.
2.you will need a crossover cable, which is different from a normal straight-through network cable. If you don't have a friend who makes cables, you can buy one from most computer stores.
