Networking Problem


ok well im a newbie to linux only using it a couple of days my friend got me into it and i cannot figure out this dam networking i use mandrake 10.1 and on the icon is says im connected but when i open the browswer nothing works i just dont get it i tried everything i have a chord going from my wall to a router then to both my computers ive switched ethernet chords ive switched ports i cannot figure this dam thing out i just want to get it to work so i can work more with it any help would be greatly apreciated thank you...

As root ... type:
ifconfig
and check the results ..
see if your interface is up and has an IP address.

You need to su to root to use 'ifconfig'.

If you have a single NIC interface, it will be called 'eth0'. The second line of the eth0 section should something like this:

inet addr:192.168.1.100 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

Are you using DHCP? Is the interface link light on?

You could also try restarting the network. The response will indicate if the network interface came up properly.
service network restart

yea im using DHCP yea the light is on and it says im connected the browser wont work though
