I'm a newbie running Linux Mandrake. I have Windows XP on the same computer and I am able to access files on a Windows 98 computer.
The way I have my network set up is:
My computer -- cable --> D-link DI-514 Wireless Router -- wireless --> Windows 98 computer with HP Deskjet 710C printer
My question is, how do I access the files on the Windows 98 computer as well as use the printer that is attached to it? I can see an application called Smb4k under Internet | File Transfer but I don't know what values I have to put in it.
smb4k doesn't install samba for some reason (at least it didn't do it for me), although its a really nice front-end. Make sure samba is installed. If you want to share files from your Mandrake machine as well, you'll need samba server too. The easiest way I found to get what's needed to share is to install Linneighborhood. It fetches samba and the other goodies that are needed (then I uninstall linneighborhood, as I don't like using it much). Most everything should be accessible by using the mouse and not particularly reading any directions. I tried this on purpose to see how easy it was getting to be. Tere was one hitch. It puts you in a group "MDKGROUP" like windows does "MSHOME", so if you have one already set up, you'll have to chaneg that. The only place I found for that was to directly edit /etc/samba/smb.conf but the file is well commented.
You should also install the webmin program. I had the same setup (sorta) But I was replacing my debian with mandrake. Debian was all setup and I have wi98 in the dual boot. But mandy would connect but you couldn't see mandrake's shares. Now if you only wanted to see the other machine that's fine but if you want to see the mandrake machine from the other it wouldn't connect. Until I installed webmin in an attempt to setup a different way than swat. Well webmin installed a package called pam-authentication as a dependency. Until then The mandrake shares weren't visible, or printer. But just by installing that package everything was visible.
