Networking Linux and Windows directly

So I have a linux system on my laptop and another desktop with NT Professional. Prior to installing the Fedora COre 3 on my laptop, I used to connect the two computers using a crossover (?) cable so one computer could access the other as well as being able to print on a sort of "network". It was a docy arrangement, but it did what I wanted.

Now, using my Linux laptop, how do I do the same thing, so that I can send something through the printer. I am a total newbie, so perhaps I am doing too much too soon.

All you should have to do for basic networking is setup the IP information manually, like you probably did in Windows. For the printing you most likely need Samba, but you don't say where the printer actually resides.
