Hello, you can start with the man pages. man ifconfig ... a good intro to networking in Debian at www.aboutdebian.com.

Linux Networking HOWTO

First, I would check and see if the NIC module is loaded (look for 8139too rather than sis900)
Code:
Mon Aug 09 10:55 AM fancy@uilleann ~ $ su -
Password:
Mon Aug 09 10:55 AM root@uilleann ~ # lsmod
Module Size Used by Not tainted
<snip>
sis900                 15372   1
<snip>
If not loaded try:
Code:
Mon Aug 09 11:02 AM root@uilleann ~ # modprobe 8139too
If you need to recycle the interface:
Code:
Mon Aug 09 10:55 AM root@uilleann ~ # ifdown eth0
Mon Aug 09 11:02 AM root@uilleann ~ # ifup eth0
