network weirdness

My setup->
Cable modem->Coyote router/DHCP server->hub-> win98(greenet wrkgrp), win2k(MPI wrkgrp) & 1 Debian machine (greenet & MPI wrkgrp).

I have internet connection, can ping & traceroute from Debian box. I have just setup LinNeighborhood on Debian machine. It correctly detects both networks and the machines connected. I can mount/browse shares.

My problem->
If the win2k machine is connected I have problems on all 3 machines- pages will either only load up to 85-99% or time out completely. If I disconnect the win2k machine the others work normally. If I disconnect the win98 & Debian box the win2k machine works fine. Shutting down smbd & nmbd does not help.

I'm out of ideas here- everything was fine after I installed LinNeighborhood but that's the only thing I have changed network-wise. go figure......

Any ideas at all would be appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds like a domain master or preferred master problem. Also might want to have a look at the os level and wins options.

You know now that you mention it I was playing around with a broadcast network AND a WINS network. I don't think I need the WINS network- I'll have to go figure out how to nix it.

You have introduced three new terms into my vocabulary - domain master & preferrred master & os level which does not mean operating system level I presume.

Thanks mcleodnine (again).

Spot on as usual mcleoudnine. Another candidate story for "stupid networking tricks".
