Network Traffic

Can anyone recommend a good monitor for checking my network traffic. It seems to be very high, it is currently receiving @ 500 b/s to 7kb/s and in about an hour has received about 12mb of something (according to system monitor).
I want to know what I am receiving and where it is going.

BTW this happens without any browser or any other network too running (as far as I am aware of).

TIA

Probably you have some ports open, and they are scanned by hacker programs. Find out what ports are open, which you really don't need.

netstat -a

.5-7kbps ? That doesn't sound like a portscan to me....

I vote for using ethereal to try and figure this out.
Also, just in case, run nmap against yourself to see if there are open ports you don't need.
