Network setup...

Hi guys,

Mandrake 9.2 is doing my head in. I'm simply trying to set up my network connection. My mandrake box is as follows:

IP: 10.0.0.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Hostname: Mandrake

My router is:

IP: 10.0.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Hostname: Smoothwall.

I boot the mandrake box. It boots to the cmd line. I log in as root.

The GUI loads and I go to:

'K Menu' > COnfiguration > Configure Your Computer.

It asks me for the root password, and I enter it. I click OK and it allows me into the Mandrake Control Centre.

I click:

Network & Internet > DrakConnect

DrakConnect loads.

Upon loading, it shows the following information in the 'Internet Access Boxout'

Type: Lan
Gateway: 10.0.0.1
Status: Not connected

In the LAN configuration box, the details for 'eth0' are:

IP: No IP
State: Down.

When I try to configure eth0, I enter the IP and subnet, and click Activate Now, and then OK. It then stays in the LAN configuration box, and the state changes to 'Up'. As soon as I click 'Connect' in the Internet Acces boxout, then the details of eth0 in the Lan config box return back to No IP' etc. I mean this is just damn silly.

Now I've tried connecting the box to the green part of my network with the IP 192.168.1.66, and it didnt work, I now go ack to doing 10.0.0.1, and when I change it and click activate now, it activates 192.168.1.66 in the LAN config box?

This is just plain stupid. Theres probably some perfectly good explanation for this, but in the eyes of a complete n00b at the moment it looks like insanity!

Can anyone help explain whats going on here?

If you give your computer an IP address it doesn't necessarily mean its connected to the network. Try to ping your gateway from the command line using the following command:

# ping -c 4 10.0.0.1

Let us know what happens.
