Network service stops after 17min

I installed Redhat 9.0 as a server (with Apache, MySQL, SendMail, DNS). For some reason after approx. 17min the network service stopped. I have to execute 'service network restart' to start the network process again.

I use Kernel 2.4.20-19.9 and a RT8029AS NIC adapter (driver NE2K-PCI). I have a static IP address.

If the Network Service is up-and-running, everything works well: Apache, SendMail, DNS, MySQL. Everything is setup with the graphical configuration tools, I have not modified any files manualy.

I completely reinstalled RedHat again, but the time-out problem did not solve.

Please help.

Is it *always* 17 minutes? If so, it sounds more like a software or driver prob than bad hardware, a bad NIC would be much less predictable.

Are you connected directly to the net, or do you go through a router/NAT?

You may have a TTL prob with your ISP, ie. the connection, and your IP, and therefore your network service, are dropping after a period of inactivity.

If you are connected directly to the net, I would seriously consider putting a condom on that thing, IYKWIM.
