Please verify that your attempt to specify that networking should start at boot is correct:

# chkconfig --list network
This should show that network is
on in at least levels 3 and 5 (my system has it set to
on in levels 2, 3, 4, and 5).
If that is correct, you should examine your
/var/log/dmesg and
/var/log/messages files for networking error lines. The network startup script does quite a bit of housekeeping, but does not result in any running daemon, so, in order to find out what happened, you will have to examine the logfiles to trace what actions were and were not completed.
