Question Network restart fails with NIC BCM5706 using bnx2 driver

Hello,

We have a number of HP DL385s running CentOS 4.5 and RedHat 4.5. Some machines have a problem with their NICs when restarting the network. The network comes up ok on first boot, but restarting the network service fails with the message "Chip reset did not complete".

Rebooting the machine fixes the issue but there is simply no way to restart networking while the machine is up. This only happens on some of the machines. Others you can restart the network just fine. Same HW, same kernel, same drivers, same NICS.

Interestingly, we also have on board BCM5708 that always restart just fine.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I dont know if this helps - but I used to have the same problem with a wireless NIC. It was a real problem because every time it disconnected (weak signal), i couldn't just restart the network, i had to completely re-boot the computer.

I did find a way around it - stop the network service, remove the driver module, mod probe it back in again, and restart the network service. Then it worked fine again untill it disconnected.

I did write a small script to automate the restarting proccess.

tjyorkshire, thanks. I've tried that as well and get the same problem. From the source code for the bnx2 driver, it appears to be related to a firmware reset that's failing.
