Network only accessible to root

Hey guys I'm using Slackware 12 and having some trouble. For some reason only root can use the network interface. Even if I pull up my wireless manager in administrator mode and click activate configuration it does nothing. I even tried pulling up a terminal SU to root and doing a ifconfig wlan0 down, then up then refresh IP, nothing. What else can I check?

I thought this would be an easy fix but apparently this is real stumper. Ive been tinkering with linux for years and Ive found that when I get views with no replies it usually means Im missing something obvious and people think Im stupid. If this is the case just say so and Ill google more.
