Network NAS progress

I finally worked out how to install Samba, so now (don't quite know how) my Linux box can see the windows network and can access the windows boxes but I can't log onto the Linux NAS from the windows side, password and user name access denied?
Also I cant log onto the NAS through the Linux box, get the same access denied message.
I wanted to set up a simple NAS with the option of also using the box as a PC for Internet access. The Internet access was easy but the networking not quite so.........so I ran 'Freenas' from a CD and after an hour I have my NAS but without the luxury of 'other tasks'. I know it can be done but how?

Nas

What distro are you running on the NAS box? And, to access the NAS box from windows, are you using Putty? And, are you assigned as a user on the NAS box, and if so, are you using ssh to access it from your other Linux box?

Distro? Ubuntu 7.04, not using putty and not quite sure if I'm assigned as a user although in windows terms I think I'm the administrator, system log on name and password? Don't think I'm usind SSH either. Not a lot of use really!

Did you add any samba users (no, it doesn't use linux accounts) using smbpasswd (smbpasswd -a username password)

Thanks, I haven't created a password or anything through SAMBA, she's running FREENAS at the moment but I'll give that a try over lunchtime. I guess I just enter (smbpasswd -a username password)in the terminal?

Did you get this error as a result of executing the smbpasswd command or when you tried to connect after?

If the former, what do you have in lmhosts (for me /etc/samba/lmhosts). Should be something like

127.0.0.1 localhost

Otehrwise, maybe http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...failure-67766/ will help

If you tried to connect from Windows, my vague memory tells me the user it tries to connect with from a Windows box is machine_name\username, and you can fix this by specifying the user t connect as at mapping time
