Network is unreachable

I have a Sony PCG-FX99V japanese laptop, its got XP and slack 8. I installed slack and setup the network fine, then i went to setup XP's network and now i get this error,

"Configuring eth0 as 10.1.1.4
SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable"

ive tried setting the network options over, even reinstalled slack, but i cant figure out what to do. any ideas?

BTW, its using a realtek 8139 nic.

not sure but it sounds like you are trying to use dhcp but also trying to suggest an ip address. this is not recommended and some dhcp servers might not like it.

check this file

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

if you are using dhcp it should show that and you should not have an ipaddress or netmask setting in the file for proper operation

DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp

Sorry can't access my Slack box to see the exact file location now, but if you don't use dhcp then set it like this

ifconfig eth0 10.1.1.4
