Network File System (nfs) - what is it and do I need it?

What exactly are Network File Systems? For what reasons might I need to start up an NFS daemon?

You will only need the NFS daemon if you want to share or server files to other systems (i.e. Unix or Linux) using the NFS protocol. Most people don't need it.
