network everywhere NIC large downloads fail

Hello Kind Lords of Linux -

I'm running Red Hat 9.0 connected directly (not wirelessly) to my Linksys wireless cable router via what the system has recognized as a Network everywhere Fast Ethernet Model NC100 NIC - The box it came in said Linksys, but I figured oh well.

Anyway - get this, it works just fine, except fails intermittently on large downloads. That is, I can connect, browse the web, even listen to streaming audio and all is A Ok. But when I download big files sometimes it just stops part way. If I happen to be using Up2date, it'll cause it to stop responding when the download stops, with no error message.

It doesn't ever seem to happen with small file transfers, just large ones. It's getting to be a drag though.

This doesn't occur on other systems connected to the router, which is acting as a dhcp server. These systems include a Win2k box and my laptop, also running RH9 but connecting wirelessly.

I've been trying to nail down a pattern of when this behavior occurs but have had no luck so far. Any ideas on what to check? Should I give the troubled machine a fixed IP? New NIC card? I'm quite lost here...

When it fails does your internet quit working completely or does that download just fail but other network connects continue to work?

I have a feeling it would most likely fail whenever the DHCP license is renewed. Check to see if that's the problem.

It simply fails for the download. The rest of my internet access keeps working just fine.
And it seemes intermittent. Sometimes fairly large downloads get through.

It seems like it happens too often to be caused by DHCP license renewal... I can recreate this problem about 3 times in 5 minutes of trying - each time the download will die at a different point.

Large downloads over eth0

Hi Bagleemo,
I'm having a simular problem so please let me know if you find a fix.

I'll describe my issue here.

WIRED:
Two Ubuntu PCs connected to a DI-524 router. Either PC, when connected to any ethernet port on the router, will fail to complete large file downloads (+30MB usually). Even when the download stalls I can still read slashdot and fark etc... One of the two PCs is DMZ.

WIRELESS:
Either PC, when connected to the same router over 802.11g will complete large downloads with no problems (I'm usually downloading linux CDs).

NOTE:
All four NICs are mac filtered. The large downloads on eth0 will sometimes pick up for a few more megs and then quit again.

My router and PCs all sit under the same desk so I feel silly using the 802.11g for anything other than my GFs iBook. :)

I'm soon going to consider resetting my router to defaults and then running it a little looser just to see what happens.
