network connection over internet

heres my question, is there a way to connect to a shared resource over the internet. okay, let me rephrase that. i want to:

rh 8 linux running samba/DSL shared to local area network
sharing /public for local storage

laptop/win2k -- map network drive to \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\public somehow (a little security would be good to)

any ideas?

Tim
