network connection auto shutdown :(

Hi There,

I'm not entirely sure if this message really belongs in the Network section, but since it's occuring on my web-server box then I thought it has some relevance.

So.. I have a USB cable modem all hooked up and serving my own website.
great.
it works fine all day while i'm here.
great.
then i leave it overnight.
which i thought would be great.

no so.

I return in the morning, and discover that the internet connection is down.
and it requires me to disconnect the USB modem, and re-attach it before it gets going again.

Looking in the message log reveals the following:

[snip]
Oct 15 00:22:55 internet gconfd (root-12769): GConf server is not in use, shutting down.
Oct 15 00:22:55 internet gconfd (root-12769): Exiting
Oct 15 00:28:43 internet dhclient: DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 62.30.112.122 port 67
[end snip]

and then the last message is repeated about a million times throughout the night.

then at 3 in the morning:
[snip]
Oct 15 03:30:03 internet dhclient: DHCPACK from 62.30.112.122
Oct 15 03:30:03 internet dhclient: bound to 82.43.58.80 -- renewal in 32641 seconds.
Oct 15 03:30:55 internet dhclient: DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 62.30.112.122 port 67
[end snip]

it appears it cam on again... then disconnected a minute later. (last msg repeated many many many times over th next few hours)

then at nine this morning, linux finally gives up altogether:

[snip]
Oct 15 09:57:29 internet dhclient: receive_packet failed on eth0: Network is down
[end snip]

the problem appears to start with the gconf thing (whatever that is) timing out (??!) and shutting down. BTW, this event occurred about 10 minutes after I left the computer for the night.

But why didn't it happen when I left it for several hours during the day ?

I just don't get it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Doug Hammond

Motorola surfboard 4200 USB cable modem
AMD XP1600+, 512MB RAM, ATI gfx, and some other stuff that aint relevent.... )

oh additionally,

this has been occurring regularly overnights for several days now

and it's got to the point where i've even been re-setting the modem manually before I leave the computer at night.. just in case it wants it's timout timer reset (if indeed such a thing even exists)... but it doesn't make any darn difference.

kinda getting tired of it ...

This could be a power issue problem, have you tried using
a powered usb hub?

power ? the cable modem is plugged into the same wall socket as the pc... and it definitely doesn't get interrupted.

as for power down the usb line ... there's nout else connected on the entire usb system.

?? is there an issue with the usb bus timing out after a while ??
i find that it reactivates when i dis/re-connect the usb lead in the morning.

i have been googling around and have seen similar problems which pertain also to NIC cards (even a thread on this forum)..... i think it's an issue with the networking setup..

but so far no-one has been able to give a solution. (or is it's there then I haven't found it).

ok... I think this has something to do with th dhcp server and/or client having a "lease" timout present.. or something ??

can anyone here elaborate exacly what this lease thingy is for and if it may cause the client (ie my computer) to be disconnected from the server (my cable modem? or is it my isp ?) ???

please help me try to understand this...

Thanks,

Doug.
