Network Configuration

Hey,

I have just installed Red Hat Linux 9 on my Server. Currently my hole network is on Microsoft Platform and this is the only Server in linux.

My Question is that i m unable to ping Linux Server from microsoft clients in either way. Although the linux server is attached to the network. My DNS Server is on Microsoft Platform which i dont wanna change as all my existing and future clients will be on Microsoft Platform.

I did create a Forward zone entry into my DNS Server for 10.10.3.44 navigator

I have configured some of the files

etc/hosts

127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost
10.10.3.44 navigator navigator.cttcom.net localhost

etc/resolv.conf

domain cttccom.net
search cttccom.net
nameserver 10.10.3.50

etc/sysconfig/network

HOSTNAME= navigator
GATEWAY=10.10.3.50
GATEWAYDEV="eth0"

My DNS Server IP is 10.10.3.50
My Linux Server IP is 10.10.3.44

well do you have a network problem of a dns problem? you need to divide and conquer... ping the IP's etc... you're providing details about far too many disparate technologies here.

Why did you install RH9 - support for that was dropped in about 2004.

You don't want localhost on the second line of your hosts btw

As suggested above - can you ping your server using the IP?

well as we have no idea what the other ips are we can't tell if they're valid or not, and it seems that's about the level we need to be aiming at. I'd be very suspicious of your netmask there, should it not be a standard /24?

outside of pinging things, do you have valid arp entries for devices on your local subnet?

sorry to state the simple things here but surely if nothing can see the server and the server cant see anything else its more likely a networking hardware issue? check the network cable from the server and/or the networking hardware its connected to, switches/hubs etc

You haven't bothered to provide any further information following from acid_kewpie's post. Perhaps you should do that before requesting further assistance with no additional information.

Can you show the output of a ping attempt from linux to an IP, and a ping to that same IP from a windows machine?
