Network beggining

WHAT TO DO IF WE WANT TO MAKE A SMALL FILE SHARING NETWORK

I have a dell note book and an emachines desktop in one room and I want to transfer some files from me emachines to my brother's dell ,

And we have a small 3com hub and some "green" network wires .

We can plug in the wires but we don't k'now how to start the network .

The dell has a brand new mandrake 9 installation, And I have a redhar 9 installed on my eMachines .

What do you people think we should do , And what utility should we be using ? .

I'll be thanking you for helping guys,, Get ready .

You have to enable FTP ...

Anmar 09-08-2003 08:10 AM

How ?

romel 09-08-2003 08:16 AM

You have to edit your /etc/xinet.d/wu-ftpd file
Type "no" in place of "yes" so that your ftp is enabled.
Then try to ftp that pc from your other pc using user and passwd. then you will be get connected with your this pc. The you have to transfer your files.

Anmar,

I assume U are a complete newbie in networking???

If so, please tell me what you have done sofar, and a little bit of your knowledge. That way we can start from your level of knowledge

Anmar 09-08-2003 09:36 AM

Well, I think I'm still in the beggining of making a small networks .
I did some in windows, Wich it doesn't need any adding numbers of making addresses or dns numbers or those messy stuff (Messy because I'm not in the set)
I didn't find that file Romel was talking about .
I talked to my brother in seattle he told me to install an rpm package file called "vsftpd" I guess .
That's it I think .

What level do you think I'm in, 0"ZERO"0 ?

romel 09-08-2003 09:47 AM

You will find the file at redhat pc.
Install that wuftpd package at redhat..
Then you can ftp to "redhat" from "mandrake" and then can download or upload files.

Steps

I think is better if the steps are explained. I think it should start by install the RPM xftp, (I dont remember the exact name), what follows next?

romel 09-08-2003 11:15 AM

I think there are lot of RPM's...but with the newer version of RedHat ftp may be installed...just have to enable it from
/etc/xinet.d/wu-ftpd file.....

:) try...contact for more info.......I am also newbie..i will help as far as I able to..

Anmar 09-08-2003 03:49 PM

What do you mean with redhat pc ?
Do you mean the one that has redhat installed on it (My eMachines) ?

And where to find the wuftpd file, What do you mean with redhat as a place to go .

And what is the xftp file

I'm sorry I'm asking tooooo much, But it's my first time hearing about something called FTP .

I went to /etc/xinet.d/ directory but could find wu-ftpd file .
There is nothing called with this name in there .

I think these questions are enough for one post :) :)

Okay anmar: Lets do the steps thingie:
First connect your computers to the hub.
next, check if both PC's have an ip address in the same range:

ifconfig
You should see a lot of info, but just try to find the IP-ADDRESS part. should look something like 123.456.789.123
Also check the MASK-address: someting like 255.255.255.0

(Not the 127.0.0.1 one... :)

My guess is that its something like 192.168.1.x
where x is a number between 1 and 254
Correct ?

Now do the same on the other machine (if config) and look for the address...

Please post them here.... (If im too basic now, forgive me, im not sure of your knowledge. what good is all those well-ment ftp-advise, i you dont even know how to let both machines talk to eachother?)

if config command doesn't show anything .

It wants me to write something .

And by the way,,,, I'm still newbie but because I post too much they estimated me as a member which is higher level than a newbie :) :) ,,,,(Well things happen)

Anyways, I can change the ip address from the redhat main menu from the system tools, Something called "network device control"
You probebly k'now that, But only my machine.
I couldn't change it in the notebook, It has mandrake.

What to do ? .

Anmar 09-09-2003 02:17 AM

I was wrong,

I think they are the same now .
my machine has diffirant number in the last range than my bro's .

But do we have to keep mask numbers completely the same ?

BTW, I could do that graphicly only .

I tried to connect linux networks before in somewhere to let them talk to each other using somehting called vim if you heard about it .

What then ?

Anmar 09-09-2003 02:20 AM

In mandrake the wizard wants me to type the host name .

What can I give it, What host name did it mean ?
