Network Attached Storage - Project ??
Hi,
I wondered if anyone can answer this ... I've been looking in to Network Attached Storage for a few weeks now and haven't got very far, the only solutions I can find are from the likes of 3Com and Maxtor etc.. These little boxes contain too small a drive and are WAY over priced (example about £1500) Does anyone know of a project thats running at the moment to build my own? When I say project I mean like people have done in the past with MP3 players for home hifi etc.. At present I have a PC doing this job but its taking up too much space and resources, ultimatly I would like a box sitting on my desk with my 100GB drive in it with some sort of web front end thats controllable from any machine on the network.... If such a project doesn't exist does anyone want to start one ?? :D Thanks for listening, Radial. |
All you really need is a box chock full o' platters and export a folder via NFS or use samba. VALinux had a similiar rig with an http front end and LVM support as well. I don't know if they had separate boxes with exports mounted over LVM.
IIRC - AFS can manage access control lists over a network span to appear as single volumes. I couldn't get afs working under 2.2.14, but I think I've just found my weekend project. |
