I have to buy a new modem/router.
I'm looking for the Netgear DG834g. Does it works fine with Linux?
Do you think it is a good modem/router?

Well, a quick search on shopping reveals that it gets 4/5 stars on average. Also, it runs busybox linux onboard.

It will be compatible with anything you put behind it. The only compatibility issue I would check out, is whether you need an ADSL router or not. If you do, then good on you and i'd say go for it.

Can I reach the Internet with a non-ADSL router, if I don't have a modem?
I'm not sure, (i'm a newbie) but i think not...

No in order to have adsl you MUST have a router. Even mobile internet have a modem-router in a stick!! The most routers that have an ethernet connection to the pc are compatible with linux. Only with window$ 7 have problems with compatibility. So if you have 7 check it fisrt in linux don't worry!

From what I've seen, it is probably more how compatible it is with your ISP than with Linux - Linux will just see an ethernet connection.

I'm using a DG834GT (an ex-Sky router) with the latest DGteam firmware loaded. It is a recommended modem/router for my ISP, since it is a Broadcomm-based unit. The DGteam firmware is available for just about all of the DG834 series.

I was using a ZyXel 660HW, but found that with my current ISP, I was getting quite a lot slower connections than I was with the modem/router they supply. I bought the DG834GT because the router supplied by the ISP was not flexible enough for my needs.

The GT was cheap - picked up on eBay for less than £10. The DGteam firmware is free, and can be downloaded from here:
