Netgear ADSL Router wont work in Mandriva 2006

Morning

I have just installed the 'Free Mandriva 2006' distro from the DVD supplied on the front of the Linux Format Mag. The installation process was all going swimmingly until I tried to connect to the internet using my Netgear DG834 ADSL modem/router and ... nothing.

Being a complete linux newb I haven't a clue what to do and I can't see any other posts on this (or any other forum) that specifically address this issue. I have tried to reconfigure the connection using the graphical tool in Mandriva and am sure that the user name/password/dns addresses are correct but I can neither ping the outside world (www.google.com) nor look at the router's setup page (192.168.0.1) using Firefox.

Can anyone help me please ?

ps. this router works perfectly in XP (I have a dual boot system).

pps. What is the difference between the connections eth0 and ppp0?

I don't know Mandriva, or that particular box, but maybe you're in need of a default gateway definition. Which in your case would almost certainly be 192.168.0.1

Network stuff is all "smoke and mirrors" anyway ...
Hopefully someone who really knows will respond.

Yeah I hope so too cos that means nothing to me
When I said 'Linux newb' I perhaps should have said 'Complete Linux and networking newb', If anyone else can help i'm looking for a 'put part A into hole b' type answer...

Thanks for taking the time to reply though
