Question NetBIOS name system alternative under Linux

Under Windows environment there is a NetBIOS name system for resolving NetBIOS names(usually host name) to IPv4 addresses on LAN either by broadcast messages or WINS server. NetBIOS uses UDP port 137:

Code:
root@test:~# grep -w 137 /etc/services
netbios-ns	137/tcp # NETBIOS Name Service
netbios-ns	137/udp
root@test:~#
..and one can use NetBIOS under Linux using samba. However, is there a similar native system under Linux for resolving local host names to IP addresses? Or is traditionally DNS used for resolving host names within the LAN to IP addresses?

As horrible as these sorts of protocols are, have a look at mdns / multicast dns.

Yes, that is what DNS is for.

Or use a hosts file.
